In the early 1800's, Sequoyah, a Cherokee, created an alphabet or syllabary of 86 symbols to represent the sounds of the Cherokee language, thus bestowing upon his entire tribe the only Native American written language.
President Andrew Jackson, whose life had been saved in battle by a Cherokee warrior, forced the displacement of the Cherokee Nation from North Carolina to Oklahoma, an arduous journey of several hundred miles known as the infamous "Trail of Tears". Thousands of men, women and children were lost on this death march.
My painting was inspired by these events and was created out of reverence and respect, and to honor the Cherokee people for their intelligence, courage, struggle and sacrifice. The star represents the seven Cherokee clans; the dots are the souls lost on the journey; the small hands and feet are those of my young son, Zachary, who is part Cherokee.
