This mixed-media work was completed in May 1969, inspired by this defense department telegram: "I DEEPLY REGRET TO CONFIRM THAT YOUR SON PRIVATE FIRST CLASS . . . DIED 31 JANUARY IN THE VICINITY OF PHU BAI , REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM. HE SUSTAINED FRAGMENTATION WOUNDS TO THE BODY FROM A ROCKET ROUND DURING A ROCKET AND MORTAR ATTACK. HIS REMAINS WILL BE PREPARED, ENCASED, AND SHIPPED AT NO EXPENSE TO YOU."

Additions and changes were made to the original collage in March 2003 to further enhance the powerful effect of the work. This piece, which spans 34 years, is a universal memorial for lives that were sacrificed and a testament to humanity's struggle for freedom, justice and peace.
